Nathan Schneider is an associate professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder and founder of the Media Economies Design Lab. He studies technology, democracy and religion, with current work focused on models for democratic ownership and governance for online platforms, protocols and media institutions.

Schneider is the author of four books, including Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life and Everything for Everyone: The Radical Tradition that Is Shaping the Next Economy. He also edited Vitalik Buterin’s Proof of Stake and co-edited Ours to Hack and to Own, a collection on platform cooperativism and democratic ownership in the digital economy.

His scholarship has appeared in journals including New Media & Society, Feminist Media Studies, Georgetown Law Technology Review, and Media, Culture & Society. As a journalist, he has reported for publications including Harper’s, The Nation, The New Republic, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times and The New Yorker. His work has also included regular columns for America magazine.

At CU Boulder, Schneider directs work through the Media Economies Design Lab on ownership, governance and sustainability in media and technology. He serves on the boards of the Metagovernance Project, Start.coop, Waging Nonviolence and Zebras Unite.
